[Core control elements of the polishing process]:
The key to the operation of the polishing machine is to achieve synergistic optimization of polishing efficiency and surface integrity. Specifically, it is necessary to ensure the efficient removal of the processing damage layer generated by the previous process while avoiding the introduction of secondary defects that affect the observation of microstructure. The process has two mutually constraining technical requirements:
Maximization of grinding efficiency: High cutting power abrasives (e.g. coarse grit abrasive belts) are recommended to increase the material removal rate, which can quickly remove the pre-process damage layer, but will result in a deeper secondary machining zone (typical depth of about 5-8 μm);
Surface integrity control: the use of fine-grade abrasives (grain size ≤ 1μm) to reduce the depth of sub-surface damage (can be controlled in the range of 0.2-0.5μm), but will correspondingly reduce the polishing rate to rough grinding conditions of 30%-40%.
Process optimization should be based on material properties (e.g., hardness, ductility) and inspection requirements (e.g., resolution of metallographic observations), and a gradient transition from roughing to finishing should be achieved through a multi-stage polishing procedure. It is recommended to remove more than 90% of the initial damage layer in the roughing stage and then switch to the finishing process to eliminate the remaining impact zone, thus balancing productivity and surface quality requirements.
